Port Washington Ohio

Port Washington, Ohio, was founded as Salisbury in 1827 by surgeon Dr. John Knight before being officially incorporated in 1868. Located in Tuscarawas County, the rural community grew significantly due to the Ohio and Erie Canal and the Pennsylvania Railroad, serving as an important shipping and trade hub for regional farmers.

Port Washington Road: Designated as Ohio's first state road (Road Number 20) in 1832, it connected Millersburg to Port Washington, allowing farmers from miles around to bring produce for transport via the canal.

Arrival of the canal

Mid-19th Century: The arrival of the Ohio and Erie Canal and later the Pennsylvania Railroad transformed the village into a bustling commercial center with general stores, a shoe store, a cider press, and furniture merchants.1868: The growing settlement was officially incorporated as a village.1878: A large three-story brick town hall was constructed to serve the growing municipal needs (succeeded by a newer municipal building in 1970).
