Platted in 1856: Originally known as "Bye's Mill," the village was named after Jonathan Bye, who owned and operated a local grain mill along Wills Creek.Incorporation: The growing settlement officially incorporated as the village of Byesville in 1881.

Coal Mining Era
The region grew significantly due to rich coal deposits, establishing Byesville as a prominent coal-mining hub in Southeast Ohio.Coal Miner Memorial: To honor the dangerous labor of local workers, a bronze life-size monument of a coal miner sculpted by Allen Cottrill was erected by the Byesville Scenic Railway community.
